Joining the LSCC

Membership of the Club is open to women (under the current legal definition) over the age of 18.  There is no upper age limit. Our joining process takes a few months but allows non-members to attend meets before applying for membership.  Through taking part in meets you’ll get to know the Club and our members will get to know you too. It is a supportive joining process and most people find that by the time they apply to join the Club they already feel a part of it.
(Please complete this brief information form and email to the Membership Secretary, who will contact you and send further information).
You can then join meets, through the Membership Secretary.
Liability for Prospectives and Guests

Membership requirements:

The attendance requirement is a minimum of eight days with the Club, which must include two multi-day meets, over a minimum period of six months and a maximum period of two years.
For Full Membership we expect you to be competent on the Scottish hill in mist and in moderate snow conditions and to have some experience of rock climbing in Scotland, see Full Membership details below.
If you have a bit less mountaineering experience, you can join as a Graduating Member and should aim to upgrade to Full Membership within six years.

Both levels of membership, Full and Graduating, have the same attendance requirement, stated above. Please read the details before applying:

Draft check list for Proposers and Seconders (useful list for applicants)

Anyone applying for membership should have a Proposer, (someone with detailed knowledge of your mountaineering ability) and two Seconders, who have been out on the hill with you (all LSCC members). Once you come along to meets and get to know the Club, you'll find members who are happy to propose and second your application.  The Membership Secretary will help you through the process and can advise when best to apply.

Applying for Membership

Download the Membership Application form and the  Membership Application Guidance Notes.
If you need further help completing the form, please contact the Membership Secretary.

Top tips on completing the application form:
Bear in mind when you complete your application form you are aiming to give the committee:
A flavour of your personal mountain experience in different conditions in Scotland, e.g. walking, scrambling, climbing, in summer and winter
The confidence that you have a realistic knowledge of your skills and that these meet the Club criteria.

Submitting your application

  • Submit your form to the Membership Secretary at least six weeks before the next Committee meeting (e.g. by end of January or end of August). Please refer to the Membership Application Notes when filling in your form.

  • You need a Proposer and two Seconders, to support your application: they must have personal knowledge of you on the hill. The Proposer must be a Full Member but one of the two Seconders may be a Graduating Member.

  • Proposers and Seconders complete an Applicant support form advising the Scrutineers that you have shown a full range of competencies. No one individual needs to have seen all your competencies in action, but between the Proposer and the Seconders, the range of competencies should be covered.

  • Your application will be considered by the Scrutineers/Committee and the Membership Secretary will advise you of the outcome.

  • Graduating Members must apply to upgrade to Full Membership within six years of joining the Club; as before you need to apply six weeks before the Committee Meeting, submitting a new application form which demonstrates your areas of development since you originally applied (there is no need to resubmit previous information) together with new Proposer and two Seconder forms to support your application.

After joining
Both new Graduating and Full members are expected to coordinate a meet and attend one Maintenance meet within two years.
